India Doesn’t Lack Talent. It Lacks a “Why.”

I had the honor of being invited as a guest speaker at RVS College of Engineering and Technology, Jamshedpur, on the occasion of World Creativity and Innovation Day 2025 — a day that reminds us that every breakthrough starts with a spark: a question, a belief, a simple “what if?”

I opened my talk with a timeless story inspired by one of the greatest TED Talks ever delivered: 🎥 “Start With Why – How Great Leaders Inspire Action” by Simon Sinek 👉 Watch it here

Sinek shares the story of Samuel Langley, who had all the funding, fame, and institutional support to build the world’s first airplane. But he failed.

Instead, it was two unknown bicycle mechanics from Ohio — the Wright brothers — who succeeded. Why?

Because Langley chased success, but the Wright brothers chased purpose.

“People don’t buy what you do. They buy why you do it.” — Simon Sinek

Now think about India.

We’ve created phenomenal platforms: 🛒 Zepto for quick commerce 📱 UPI for payments 🎓 BYJU’S and PhysicsWallah for learning

But are we solving core, foundational problems?

While China leads in:

  • 🛻 EV and battery innovation
  • ☀️ Solar and semiconductor manufacturing
  • 🧠 AI hardware and chip-level research

India still leads in apps, not atoms. We’re building convenience, but are we building capability?

💡 Sinek’s Law of Diffusion of Innovation says change begins with a small group — innovators and early adopters — who believe in the why behind the product.

That’s the mindset we must embrace.

So here’s what I shared with the future innovators at RVS:

✅ Don’t just ask, “What can I build?” Ask, “Why does it matter? Who does it help?

✅ Don’t just prepare for placement. Prepare for problems worth solving.

✅ Don’t just follow trends. Create movements.

📊 India doesn’t lack engineers. India doesn’t lack ideas. India lacks a system that connects belief to innovation.

Let’s fix that — starting in our classrooms, labs, and minds.

Because when we begin with WHY… 🇮🇳 India won’t just follow the innovation curve. We’ll bend it.
